Just keep building.
Somewhere along the way, tech stopped feeling like our own. We traded innovation for metrics, and repairability for convenience.
Our smartphones require expertise to open and push us to repair them too quickly. Our cars are not only more expensive, but designed for replacement not longevity through repair. Not only driving up purchase cost; also cost to repair and operate over time. More worrisome, consumer tech having a stronger reliance on services means more dependence on systems we don’t control.
Just within the past week we’ve seen two major cloud outages:

These caused multi-layered disruptions through consumer-facing services, but also rippled through corporate networks, SaaS-based products service small businesses, etc.
We’re feeling the effects of centralized operations.
This is why I feel building is freedom. We should keep building things, tinkering, innovating. Open-source, “maker cultures”, DIY…they aren’t perfect, but there is plenty of good innovation that eventually falls out of these places.
I wish I had more sophisticated thoughts on this topic, but for now I’m going to keep building and see what happens.
